Hilarity NOT Intended?
Okay, so in this story about Roman Polanski, I read one of the oddest sentences ever. Here goes.
"This case serves as a classic example of how our justice system can be abused, and defendants' rights trampled, by an unholy alliance between courts and criminal prosecutors," said a statement from attorneys Chad Hummel and Brad Dalton.
Hmm...So let's recap for those of you who may not have heard of Polanski. In the 1970s, he was accused of, and ended up pleading guilty to, raping a 13-year-old girl and subsequently fled to France where he has lived for the past 30 years. When he won an award a few years back, he couldn't go to England to pick it up because he would be shipped back to the U.S. for trial.
So why was the sentence funny? Yeah, this case definitely does not fall under the "defendant's rights being trampled" scenario. Remember, he isn't really a defendant because oh yeah, HE FLED THE COUNTRY! Actually, if anything, he is a convict, a felon fleeing from justice.
Something tells me these guys have no clue what the heck they are talking about and no idea how hypocritical they sound.
But still, this is one of the funniest lines I have heard in awhile. Frankly, I would say it was ol' Roman who abused the system. The lawyers can speak gibberish all they want, but only Polanski has taken advantage of the legal system. Until he comes back for jail time, anything the prosecutors do is rather irrelevant.
