Gasoline, Credit Cards, New Jersey?

In this article from the Home News Tribune, the price of gas at one New Jersey station is 16 cents cheaper if the person pays cash rather than using a credit card. Fair enough, the article mentions why, high fees on credit cards. But I thought this quote was interesting.

The New Jersey gasoline tax-rate exceeds only the tax rates in Alaska and
Wyoming.

"Not unless the entire Legislature doesn't want to come back next year," Senate President Richard J. Codey, D-Essex, told Gannett New Jersey

Now that is kind of interesting. New Jersey has the third lowest state gasoline taxes in the nation. (Now that is a surprise!) But look at the quote. A DEMOCRAT talking about how the legislators wouldn't be able to raise the gas tax. No mention of what that added tax revenue would do as other articles focus on. Actually, this is the final few lines from the article, one of the strongest parts of a report.

I have to admit it, this article was well written, well researched, and actually informative about an issue that is so often screwed up. I am impressed.

Now, if only every other idiot reporter could learn from this guy. Man, how sweet would that be? An article talking economics with an actual knowledge of economics, in this case, taxes and business incentives. Alas, maybe in the future.
